The Sweetness of Sorghum Session 2 + 3: Sorghum Syrup & Culinary Traditions

Join Maya Marie and the NYRP Urban Ag team to learn about the processing sorghum into grain, seed, flour, and syrup.

  • Saturday Oct. 10th, (12-4pm) We’ll return to our sorghum beds we planted in May to go over assessing the sorghum and gain hands-on practice of harvesting and methods of storing it for seed, grain, juice, and syrup.

  • Sunday Oct. 11th, (12-4pm) Producing quality, nutritious, and delicious sorghum syrup is an art and science that has been fine tuned amongst Southern and Appalachian farmers for centuries. During this closing session, participants will have the opportunity to partake in the beautiful transformation that is sorghum syrup production.

These sessions are part 2 + 3 in The Sweetness of Sorghum, a hands-on Deep Routes workshop series honoring the foodways that connect plants, peoples, and lands across Afro-Indigenous diasporas.
