About Us

Deep Routes is an educational project that uplifts the foodways of African and Indigenous diasporas.

We aim to be a resource to people of African and Indigenous diasporas as they (re)connect to, celebrate, and/or deepen their relationships to food; via understanding the Roots and Routes of our interconnected plants, animals, people, places, culinary practices, agricultural practices, and rituals.

  • Mission

Our mission is to realign the culinary and agricultural learning experience with a collaborative and culturally-affirming mode of sharing knowledge. We aim to do this by highlighting Black and Indigenous foodways through easily accessible, adaptable, and in-depth learning materials that can be used by educators of all levels.

  • Vision

We envision a transformative learning experience that weaves the stories of plants, animals, and land alongside the experiences of Black and Indigenous people into a collective web of shared knowledge that affirms the lives of students and educators of color.

  • Values

    Uplift Afro-Indigenous foodways and wisdom.

    Collaborate and share knowledge.

    Make learning resources accessible.

  • Our virtual, hybrid, and in-person workshops, courses, and events are offered throughout the year within the NYC/State and tri-state area as well as across the country.
