George Washington Carver was born into enslavement in Missouri, however at a young age he was kidnapped and separated from his mother and siblings. When he was returned back to his enslavers they taught him how to read. He would go on to use those skills and his curiosity about exploring nature to learn about medicinal herbs. Carver would go on to become an incredibly impactful scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor.
