Processing Seeds for the Soulful Seed Library
The Soulful Seed Library is moving and grooving along as we prepare it for our grand opening later this fall! Recently we added pavers to the shed’s foundation and began to furnish the inside, and this past Saturday we had our second skill-share around seed saving and processing seeds for storage.
During this session we invited participants to learn about seed saving, share their relationships to seeds, and help process some of the seeds that will be available in the library. Alexx Caceres, ENY Youth Farm Manager and Lead Seed Keeper for Deep Routes’ Soulful Seed Library, facilitated this skill-share. They led participants on an interactive farm tour to identify plants that are beginning to go to seed or have fruits that are ready to begin processing.
Then participants returned to our demonstration area to learn some foundational seed saving terms and get in some practice of processing a variety of seeds. Some of which included wet processing bitter melon, tomatoes, and cucumbers; as well as dry processing okra, sorghum, beans, and bok choi. Throughout the day folks enjoyed catered lunch as well as drinks provided by Tractor. We wrapped the day with folks getting to take home some of the seeds and fresh produce leftover from the ENY Farms’ Saturday market.
We’re excited to see this coming together and if you’re interested in staying up to date with the Library’s happenings, complete our Membership Interest Form. And scroll down below to see some snapshots from Saturday.
